Brand Story
Albuquerque, New Mexico—affectionately known as “The Duke City”—represents the cultural heart of the Southwest, blending history, community pride, and an enduring connection to the past. The nickname “Duke City” honors the origin of the city’s name. Founded in 1706, the city was named after the 17th-century Duke of Albuquerque. Over 300 years later, this timeless nickname resonates through the vibrant culture, diverse cuisine, and deep love of local heritage that can only be found in New Mexico.
Our City Roots Collection is designed to celebrate the rich culture and overwhelming sense of community that pulses through our city. From traditions passed down through cuentos and family gatherings, to the celebration of art and music that echoes through our streets, Albuquerque thrives on a deep, shared connection. The community here isn’t just about living in the same place—it’s about a mutual respect for the history that shaped us, the culture that sustains us, and the future that we build together.
The 505 logo pays homage to the Albuquerque area code which was established as one of the country's first area codes in 1947 and previously covered the entire state of New Mexico. The state outline creates the interior of the zero and features the Zia sun symbol. Made of a circle with four groups of rays extending in four different directions, the Zia is a sacred symbol of the indigenous Zia Pueblo and is closely associated with the state of New Mexico due to its feature on the state flag.
The blackletter font used in the wordmark is a nod to the historical significance of the Duke City nickname and represents the style of font commonly found in the art and murals around the city. The Zia symbol can also be found hidden in the style of the D with the depiction of the four rays carried into the C.
The City Roots Collection is more than just a celebration of Albuquerque—it’s a celebration of the people who call it home. It reflects our diverse heritage, our shared sense of pride, and the unwavering spirit of community that is at the heart of the 505.
