Thomas Harding and MLB.com's Manny Randhawa split duties on this edition of the Rockies Beat newsletter. DENVER -- The Rockies have gradually turned over their lineup to younger players such as 2024 Gold Glove Award winners Ezequiel Tovar at shortstop and center fielder Brenton Doyle, plus a couple of players who have scratched their offensive potential in outfielder Nolan Jones and first baseman Michael Toglia. PITCHERS AND CATCHERS, A SURE SIGN OF SPRING |
“Pitchers and catchers.” Those three words are music to the baseball fan’s ears. For the Rockies, pitchers and catchers are scheduled for their first workout of the spring in Scottsdale on Thursday. And for Black and his staff, that will be a welcome sight, even more than usual. That’s because the starting rotation will finally be healthy again, with the hope that it stays that way. Right-handers Germán Márquez and Antonio Senzatela, who made a combined four starts for Colorado last season, are expected to be ready to go. As is stalwart left-hander Kyle Freeland, who missed some time due to injury last year as well. A hurler who will garner much attention is Dollander, who is the organization’s No. 1 prospect per MLB Pipeline (No. 25 overall) and has dominated in the Minor Leagues. In his first professional season last year, Dollander posted a 2.59 ERA in 23 starts between High-A Spokane and Double-A Hartford, striking out 34% of batters he faced. Could Dollander make the big club out of camp? It’s one of the big questions as Spring Training fast approaches. Another is whether Márquez and Senzatela can regain their form from earlier in their careers -- from 2017-18, they were part of one of the best rotations in franchise history along with Freeland, who finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting in ’18. But for now, those three words -- “pitchers and catchers” -- are more than enough. |
