Welcome back to the Dodgers Beat newsletter! It's that time of year again: Pitchers and catchers report to Camelback Ranch in just a few days, and the full squad will be in camp by the end of next week. Let’s get into it … With another monster offseason in the books, the Dodgers can fully focus on their title defense with Spring Training almost underway. No team has repeated as World Series champions since the Yankees won three in a row from 1998-2000. The Dodgers have not been shy about their ambition to go back-to-back -- and with the talent they have, perhaps take it a step further and begin building a dynasty. It all starts here. Here’s everything you need to know for Spring Training: When is the first workout for pitchers and catchers? Several Dodgers have already arrived, but the first official workout for pitchers and catchers is set for Tuesday. What is the date of the first full-squad workout? The first full-squad workout will be Saturday, Feb. 15. Where is the team’s facility? The Dodgers train at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz. They share the facility with the White Sox. |
Can fans attend workouts? Fans can attend spring workouts free of charge. Public viewing areas will be open at 9 a.m. MST starting Tuesday. Who are some new faces fans should know? Where to start? There’s Roki Sasaki, the highly regarded starter from Japan, and two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell in the rotation. Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates, both All-Stars last season, are additions to the bullpen. Outfielder Michael Conforto and Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim are new to the position player ranks. That’s not to mention Teoscar Hernández and Blake Treinen -- who aren’t exactly new faces, but were re-signed after hitting free agency following the World Series. Who are some of the top prospects invited to Major League camp? |
Sasaki is in camp as a non-roster invitee, as he isn’t on the 40-man roster, but he’s expected to begin the season with the big league club. He’s ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 overall prospect. The Dodgers have five other players in camp who are on Pipeline’s Top 100 list: catcher/outfielder Dalton Rushing (No. 30), outfielder Josue De Paula (No. 40), left-hander Jackson Ferris (No. 71), shortstop Alex Freeland (No. 72) and outfielder Zyhir Hope (No. 75). When is the team’s first Cactus League game? The Dodgers host the Cubs on Feb. 20 at 12:05 p.m. PT (1:05 p.m. MST). What are a few other notable spring games? In addition to the Tokyo Series preview against the Cubs from Feb. 20-21, the Dodgers are also set to take on their biggest divisional rivals during spring: the Padres on Feb. 23 and the Giants on March 1, both at Camelback Ranch. |
What is Spring Breakout and when is the game? For the second year in a row, MLB will highlight the top talent in the Minor Leagues at Spring Breakout, with 16 matchups across the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues from March 13-16. The Dodgers prospects are set to host their Cubs counterparts on March 13 at 6:05 p.m. PT. Will the team’s games be televised? The Dodgers have not yet announced their spring broadcast schedule, but most of the games are usually available on SportsNet LA and MLB.TV. When is the club’s last game in Arizona? The Dodgers host the Guardians on March 11 at 1:05 p.m. PT before departing for Tokyo. Will there be any additional exhibitions before the regular season? |
Before the Tokyo Series, the Dodgers will play two exhibition games at the Tokyo Dome against Nippon Professional Baseball teams: the Yomiuri Giants at 3 a.m. PT (7 p.m. JST, March 15) and the Hanshin Tigers at 8 p.m. PT (12 p.m. JST, March 16). Both games are on March 15 in the U.S. When the Dodgers return from Japan, they’ll play three Freeway Series exhibitions: one at Dodger Stadium on March 23 followed by two at Angel Stadium from March 24-25. What are the details for Opening Day? The Dodgers open their season with two games against the Cubs at the Tokyo Dome from March 18-19. First pitch is set for 3:10 a.m. PT (7:10 p.m. JST) for both games, which are considered Cubs home games. In the domestic opener, the Dodgers host the Tigers at 4:10 p.m. PT on March 27. |

GET TO KNOW … HYESEONG KIM |
Throughout Spring Training, we’ll use this newsletter to highlight some of the new additions to the Dodgers. Up first is Kim, who spoke to the media at DodgerFest last week. Here are some selected questions and answers from the scrum: What made you want to join the Dodgers? Kim, through an interpreter: “It was my favorite team growing up, and obviously it’s the best team in the world. It’s been really exciting. Obviously, we have a lot of star power, a lot of superstars on the team, so it’s been exciting to get to know them. I want to make sure I live up to that standard, playing with the superstars, and I want to prepare the right way during spring.” | Why were the Dodgers your favorite team growing up? Kim: “We had a lot of great Korean players such as Chan Ho Park, Hyun Jin Ryu. [I] grew up watching them as a kid, and just a lot more exposure as a kid watching the Dodgers.” What have you learned about the Dodgers while you’ve been working out at the team facility in Arizona? Kim: “First week, we ran a lot of assessments and testing on [my] body, and [I] was able to find out what [I] lack or what [I’m] good at. They’re using those testing results to come up with [my] program, so [I’m] really impressed with how we go about that process.” |
