HOUSTON -- After saying goodbye to four key members of the 2022 World Series championship team -- outfielder Kyle Tucker, starting pitcher Justin Verlander, reliever Ryan Pressly and, likely, third baseman Alex Bregman -- the new-look Astros will begin Spring Training next week looking to keep their playoff streak alive.

Under second-year manager Joe Espada, the Astros will open camp and begin the long march toward what they hope will be a ninth consecutive playoff appearance while trying to win their eighth American League West title in the past nine years.

TRIVIA

Billy Wagner

With the Astros set to retire Hall of Fame closer Billy Wagner’s No. 13 this summer, Cooper Hummel (2024) will go down as the last Astros player to wear that number. Who was the first in franchise history to wear No. 13?

A. Bruce Bochy
B. Joe Ferguson
C. Curt Blefary
D. Turk Farrell

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Ben Gamel

• The Astros added a much-needed left-handed bat on Wednesday by signing outfielder Ben Gamel to return to Houston. Gamel, 32, began last season with the Mets and was claimed off waivers by the Astros on Aug. 20. He slashed .259/.377/.362 with a homer in 69 plate appearances before fracturing his left fibula sliding into the outfield wall in Anaheim while making a catch.

• First-base coach Dave Clark was an accomplished boxer as a teenager and was on a path to the Olympics before politics -- and later baseball -- got in the way. Clark has no regrets. “First of all, I just want people to think of me for who I am, Dave Clark the baseball guy, not Dave Clark the boxer. Just don’t mess with me. Don’t put me in a bad spot.”

• The Astros announced on Tuesday that they are going to retire the No. 13 worn by Billy Wagner, who was elected to the Hall of Fame last month and will be inducted in July. Wagner saved a club-record 225 games over nine seasons in Houston and will become the 10th Astros player to have his number retired. It will be hung in the rafters during Hall of Fame weekend on Aug. 16.

TRIVIA ANSWER

D. Farrell

The first All-Star in franchise history, Farrell wore No. 43 for the expansion Colt .45s in 1962 before switching to 13 in ’63. He surrendered the first home run in the Astrodome; it came off the bat of Mickey Mantle during a 1965 exhibition.
