MIAMI -- It has become a running joke between left-hander Thomas White and catcher Joe Mack that one day they will eventually cross paths. Although White (Miami’s No. 1 prospect, MLB Pipeline’s No. 28 overall) and Mack (Miami’s No. 4, No. 94 overall) have competed in Spring Breakout each of the past two seasons, their shared time has been relegated to bullpen sessions or live batting practice on the back fields at the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla. |
The potential battery might finally get its chance while representing the National League in the 2025 All-Star Futures Game. The annual showcase of baseball’s top prospects will take place at 4 p.m. ET on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta. It will air live on MLB Network and will be simulcast on MLB.TV, MLB.com and via the MLB app. More on the Futures Game • Team-by-team breakdown | Rosters | Tickets • All-time rosters | Best plays, players in FG history • History | Complete coverage “I made a joke with [Mack] because obviously he's really good, and I really enjoyed throwing to him, and we keep making jokes like, ‘Hey, I'm going to catch up with you at some point and we'll be able to throw together in a game,’” White said. “But I keep making jokes, like, ‘Dude, you just keep jumping levels before I get there.’ He's tearing it up.” Added Mack: “I was actually talking with [director of Minor League operations] Hector Crespo, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I've never actually caught him,’ and he's like, ‘Oh, maybe this time you'll be able to catch him.’ So, I'm looking forward to that opportunity.” |
The Marlins selected White and Mack in Competitive Balance Round A two years apart. White, 20, moved up to Double-A Pensacola on June 17 and has given up just one run in 7 2/3 innings between two starts for the Blue Wahoos. Mack, 22, earned a promotion to Triple-A Jacksonville on April 22 and has five homers in his last six games entering Thursday. While White might be the younger of the two, this marks his second Futures Game. Last summer, he recorded just two outs in the fourth, allowing one run on one hit and three walks with a strikeout. “One, just happy that I get a chance to get a little redemption, a second chance,” White said. “Two, I would say I know what to expect in terms of warming up and how to do all that. The event is a lot of publicity stuff, and not as much focused on the baseball [part] as I thought it was. So now I kind of know what to expect in terms of my warmup and how to get myself ready. I don't think I was quite warmed up enough when I came into the game last time. “I should have battled through it a little better than I did, but part of it is getting out of your routine and being comfortable with doing something a little different. So now that I know what to expect, I can prepare myself a little bit better. It's kind of like your first year of pro ball versus your second -- you just kind of know what you're getting into.” |
This is Mack’s first invitation to the Futures Game, the latest of many honors bestowed upon him since his breakout 2024 season. He was the recipient of the Minor League Gold Glove Award for defensive excellence at catcher, was named Double-A Pensacola’s MVP and participated in the Arizona Fall League. Last Friday, Mack caught a no-hitter for a Triple-A Jacksonville ballclub that captured the Southern League’s first-half title. “I believe in hard work, dedication, faith and trust in the work that you're doing and all that stuff to get to this point,” Mack said. “I have to give my credit to God and Jesus about that, because I wouldn't be at the spot where I am without him. I just have to say that first. It's really cool to be able to be here and be selected for this opportunity. I'm looking forward to it. Last time, last year, we were watching the game on the TV, and it was just so cool to watch. So, I'm excited to be participating in that this time.” |
