SAN DIEGO -- The Padres will be left to wonder “what if” after the Brewers stormed to the 2026 World Series title, sweeping the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series before beating the Rays in five games in the Fall Classic. San Diego’s NL Division Series against Milwaukee hung in the balance throughout. Who knows? Maybe they, too, could have ended their longstanding title drought … if only a few bounces and breaks had gone their way. Alas, it’s onto 2027. The offseason is officially underway, meaning free agency, trades and awards season. Here are some key dates for upcoming awards and a look at the Padres in the mix. Sunday (5:30 p.m. PT, ESPN): Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Stunningly, neither Fernando Tatis Jr. nor Manny Machado were announced as finalists for the Gold Glove Award, but the Padres still have a pair who could take home some hardware. Freddy Fermin is looking to join Benito Santiago (1988, ‘89, ‘90) as the only Padres catchers to win a Gold Glove. Similarly, Ty France will be looking to join Adrián González (2008, ‘09) as Padres first basemen to win the Award. Monday: Louisville Slugger announces Silver Slugger Award finalists |
Monday (3 p.m. PT, MLB Network): BBWAA Awards finalists announced This includes AL/NL finalists for Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Cy Young Award, Reliever of the Year and Most Valuable Player. Nov. 9 (4 p.m. PT, MLB Network): BBWAA Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Awards I’m curious to see if Bradgley Rodriguez gets a downballot vote or two here. But the Padres’ best chance at snapping the Majors’ longest Rookie of the Year drought (dating to Santiago in 1987) might come next year, with Ethan Salas in that mix. Nov. 10 (MLB Network, 4 p.m. PT): BBWAA Manager of the Year Awards Brewers manager Pat Murphy is the favorite to take home the honor for a third straight season. But Craig Stammen has a solid case to be a finalist. He became the first skipper in franchise history to win 90 games in his first year managing in MLB, while navigating a treacherous starting pitching situation through most of the summer. Nov. 11 (4 p.m. PT, MLB Network): BBWAA Cy Young Awards and Reliever of the Year Awards Mason Miller might get a few downballot Cy Young Award votes, but the Padres presumably won’t factor into that mix. As for the newly implemented BBWAA Reliever of the Year Award, Miller is the presumptive favorite, coming off a season in which he posted a 1.67 ERA and a 1.17 FIP, while recording 129 strikeouts over 70 innings and leading the National League with 38 saves. |

First day after the World Series: Eligible players become free agents As of Thursday, nine Padres officially became free agents: Adrian Morejon, Ty France, Jason Adam, Casey Mize, Robbie Ray, Walker Buehler, Ramón Laureano, Luis Rengifo and Austin Hays. Monday, 2 p.m. PT: Quiet period ends Michael King is set to opt out of his contract and become a free agent. But it’s not until Monday that he and the Padres’ other free agents can negotiate and sign with any club. So the Padres have until Monday to negotiate exclusively with those 10 players. This is also the deadline for a handful of team and player options. The Padres have a decision to make on their team option with Nick Pivetta (and seem willing to consider restructuring). Same with Kyle Hart, who would be owed $2.5 million if the Padres pick up his option. Yuki Matsui and Wandy Peralta each have player options they’d need to exercise before this deadline. The Padres seem likely to decline mutual options on Griffin Canning, Lucas Giolito and Miguel Andujar. It’s also the last day for the Padres to make qualifying offers to eligible free agents. Morejon seems like an obvious candidate to receive that offer -- one-year, $23.15 million. If he declines the offer, the Padres would receive Draft pick compensation. There’s an outside chance France could get one as well. King, having been tendered a qualifying offer last offseason, cannot receive one this year. Nov. 10-12: General Managers Meetings in Las Vegas Nov. 17 (1 p.m. PT): Deadline for players to accept a qualifying offer Nov. 20: Tender deadline The Padres have until this date to decide whether they will tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players: Miller, Gavin Sheets, JP Sears, Luis Campusano, Fermin and Jeremiah Estrada |
