The Giants believe their young pitching depth is the strength of the organization. They’ll get to showcase one of their most highly touted arms at the 2025 All-Star Futures Game later this month. Left-hander Carson Whisenhunt, the club’s No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will represent the Giants at the annual exhibition game, which features some of the best talent in the Minor Leagues and will take place on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta. Top prospect Bryce Eldridge (No. 1) also looked like he was on his way to earning his second consecutive Futures Game nod this year, but the 20-year-old first baseman was shelved with a moderate right hamstring strain last week, leaving Whisenhunt as the Giants’ lone selection. Whisenhunt, 24, has logged a 4.55 ERA in 16 starts for Triple-A Sacramento in 2025. The Giants’ 2022 second-round Draft pick has earned two Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors this year and entered Tuesday leading Minor League pitchers in innings pitched (89). He also ranks first in the PCL in WHIP (1.27) and second in both wins (7) and strikeouts (79). |

It’ll be the second trip to the Futures Game for Whisenhunt, who was also named to the National League prospect squad in 2023, when he recorded a 2.45 ERA in 16 starts between Single-A San Jose, High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond. Whisenhunt features a 92-94 mph two-seamer and an elite changeup, but he's been working on incorporating a new slider this year to help round out his arsenal. He’s part of a trio of Carsons, with the first of the bunch -- right-hander Carson Seymour (No. 20) -- debuting with the Giants on Sunday. Whisenhunt and right-hander Carson Ragsdale (No. 21) might not be far behind, especially now that the Giants are without lefty Kyle Harrison, who was one of four players sent to the Red Sox to complete the blockbuster Rafael Devers trade. If the Giants find themselves in need of another rotation option, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Whisenhunt get his first callup to the Majors at some point this year. “I’m really hoping I do,” Whisenhunt said during Spring Training. “Obviously, you don’t know. All I can do is just go out there and compete and get outs, do what I need to do and see what happens from there.” |

The Giants entered Tuesday having lost 11 of their past 15 games -- including five of six to the lowly Marlins and White Sox -- but they reaffirmed their belief in manager Bob Melvin by picking up his option for 2026. “Having the chance to work alongside Bob every day, we’re really fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most well-respected managers in baseball,” Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said in a statement. “His leadership, preparation and connection with our players have been invaluable, and we believe he’s the right person to continue guiding this team forward.” More >> |
