Don’t forget, Sunday is Mother’s Day.

Moms mean everything and do everything. MLB.com has written about a few Phillies moms over the years. There is José Alvarado’s mother, of course. But there is J.T. Realmuto, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, Max Kepler, Taijuan Walker, including his mom's battle with cancer, and Weston Wilson.

In an “Ask the Phillies” segment on Phanavision a couple years ago, Alec Bohm said his mom is his superhero.

Bryce Harper homered on consecutive Mother’s Days a few years ago with the Nationals.

But maybe nothing can beat a player calling his mother and telling her that he made the big leagues.

Bryson Stott remembers calling his mother Shana to tell her the good news on April 4, 2022. Stott entered camp competing with Didi Gregorius to be the team’s shortstop. But as camp progressed, he found himself competing with Bohm to be the third baseman.

Both Stott and Bohm made the team.

“I called her and said, ‘I think I got called up to the big leagues, but I’m not sure,’” Stott said.

He wasn’t sure?

“I remember I was eating,” Stott said. “Joe [Girardi] said, ‘You’re coming with us to Philly,’ and then he left. And then he came back and said, ‘Don’t say anything.’ I went up to Bryce [Harper] and I said, ‘Well, obviously I’m going to Philly. Lehigh [Valley] also opens at home, so I was flying to Philly no matter what.’”

So, Stott told his mom he though he made it. His mom got emotional, knowing that her son had fulfilled a lifelong dream.

They chatted a few more minutes. Stott called her back 20 minutes later, once Harper confirmed he really, truly made the Phillies’ Opening Day roster.

“She was super excited,” he said. “She knew that was my dream forever. She remembered the tee-ball games and stuff like that and said it made it even crazier. Probably bad timing on my part. She was going into work. But it was weird because I couldn’t tell anybody. But when the Phillies tweeted the roster and I was on it, I got a thousand texts so then the emotions kind of hit.”

Andrew Painter will make his Triple-A Lehigh Valley debut on Thursday night in Allentown, Pa.

The Phillies have a plan in place for Painter, who could be promoted this summer. Dave Dombrowski has said “July-ish,” which remains in play.

The Phillies will carefully monitor Painter’s workload until he is ready to join the club, if he is pitching well and there is a need. He might be limited to around 120-130 innings, including his innings in the Minor Leagues. He threw only 11 1/3 innings in four starts with Single-A Clearwater.

Painter is a hot ticket, but IronPigs right-hander Mick Abel is pitching well, too.

Abel, who is the organization’s No. 8 prospect, was just named the Phillies’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April. He went 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA in five April starts, striking out 32 and walking 11 in 29 1/3 innings. His four-seam fastball averaged 95.6 mph, which ranked fifth among Triple-A pitchers (minimum 200 four-seam fastballs).

He is 4-2 with a 2.75 ERA in seven starts overall, striking out 42 and walking 17 in 39 1/3 innings.

Abel had been a Top 100 prospect at one point, but he fell from the list after struggling with his command, especially last season with Lehigh Valley. Abel said in January that he hoped to simplify things this season. He seems to be doing just that.

“He’s extremely talented,” Phillies general manager Preston Mattingly said. “People want people to have success instantly. Development for every player is different. It’s not always linear. I think Mick was just a really young kid in Triple-A. It’s not easy. And the thing I’m most proud of, the thing the organization is more proud of, is he never wavered. He kept batting. He kept grinding. He kept trying to get better. I think you see guys come out the other side and – we knew the talent he had, he knew the talent he had and you kind of see him growing up right before your eyes.”

The Phils named Lehigh Valley infielder Otto Kemp and Single-A Clearwater infielder Aroon Escobar their Minor League Hitters of the Month. Kemp, 25, slashed .330/.421/.711, going 32-for-97 with 11 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 24 RBIs. Escobar, 20, slashed .360/.461/.627 with five doubles, five home runs and 18 RBIs.

Jamie Moyer threw a shutout against the Braves on May 7, 2010, becoming the oldest player in baseball history to throw a shutout at 47 years, 170 days old. He allowed two hits and struck out five.

Werth had eight hits in the Series. Howard, Ruiz and Feliz each tied for second with six.
